Chef role is just the job for Gareth 02/01/12

A CITY hotel has helped an aspiring young cook get a foot in the kitchen door by taking him on as a full time commis chef.

Gareth Crimmins, 17, from Rumney, joined the Radisson Blu, Cardiff, on a work placement, but so impressed the hotel team, he has been made a full staff member.

Under the tutelage of critically acclaimed head chef Mattias Wenngren, Gareth will now develop his culinary skills at the hotel’s Italian-inspired restaurant, Filini.

The Radisson Blu was approached about the apprenticeship by ACT Training, which saw it as a great opportunity for Gareth to work in the busy kitchen of a hotel.

“If you don’t know something, then people are happy to explain, which means that I have been able to learn a lot.”

Manager Sally Hughes said: “Competition for jobs is intense, but Gareth’s desire to learn and passion for food made him stand out.”

Thanks to my employer and ACT, I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds - earning money and achieving qualifications.
