Health care includes work in hospitals, the community, doctors' surgeries, pharmacies, dental services, opticians and hospices, as well as various private clinics. You could help patients in hospital wards or their homes - serving food, making and changing beds, ensuring they're comfortable, taking someone's temperature, and so on.

Social care involves helping people with a particular need, such as the disabled or elderly. it usually takes place in the home or in residential care homes. Social care staff can be personal care assistants working in someone's home, or might carry out community work, helping people in their everyday lives. Duties could involve anything from helping clients get dressed to driving them around.

The NHS, private sector, local authorities, voluntary organisations and the armed forces all employ apprentices, and you'll choose from a broad range of specialisms.

I have learnt far more on my placement than I ever did in a classroom. I have benefited from hands-on and one on one mentoring which has boosted my confidence and helped me gain valuable experience.
